Gray Bats

From Episode 301

Gray Bats

Wild Side Guide Alan Griggs shows viewers why bats don’t deserve their spooky reputation. It seems these winged wonders have sparked fear and loathing wherever they fly. But as we find out, bats play an important role in our environment by ridding our skies of tons of insects. You can watch Alan as he climbs into a Putnam County cave with researchers as they search for endangered Gray bats. Did you know that most Gray bats are found in only eight caves scattered around five states, including Tennessee? And while they’re hidden deep in the darkness that hasn’t stopped researchers at Tennessee Tech like Erick Britzke from trying to discover some of the secrets behind the bats’ lifestyles. One of the questions they hope to answer is whether these cave dwellers are adapting to the growing urban setting that surrounds them.
