Sturgeon Release
Imagine a fish that dates back to prehistoric times - a fish that can grow to several hundred pounds and live a hundred years or more! TWRA is busy returning the amazing lake Sturgeon to Tennessee waterways, where once it was found. The Lake Sturgeon’s unique appearance hasn’t changed over the last few millions of years, making it a fascinating object of attention, especially for youngsters. Wild Side Guide Alan Griggs takes us to the French Broad River in east Tennessee where TWRA biologists spent some time searching for previously-released Sturgeon in advance of another major release of the fish - this one involving some very excited school children. The hope is that the huge Lake Sturgeon will once again swim the depths of Tennessee’s rivers, making a thrilling catch for fishermen and bringing more balance to our fragile ecosystem.
The Lake Sturgeon is an endangered species wherever it is found in the U.S. To learn more about this amazing fish, check out www.earthwave.org/sturgeon.htm.
