Chronic Wasting Disease

From Episode 404

Photograph of a deer

This affliction has established itself in the western U.S. and now appears to be spreading to the upper Midwest. As a result, deer and elk hunters across the country are being warned to take extra care in observing and handling their quarry. There are conflicting theories as to the cause of Chronic Wasting Disease, but there is no doubt that for whitetail and elk it is deadly. Wild Side Guide Richard Simms scouts for deer with TWRA officer Ben Layton in southeast Tennessee and provides our viewers with a better understanding of CWD and its effects. We see how the deer population is being thinned in Wisconsin and learn what hunters need to do to protect themselves when field dressing an animal. While the disease has not been found in Tennessee, TWRA officers are not taking anything for granted. They will be closely monitoring deer populations across the state.
