Wildlife Management Area (WMA) Overview

From Episode 409

Wildlife Management Areas

Chances are if you travel our great state it won’t take you long to discover one of our Wildlife Management Areas. WMA’S are not state parks but tracts of land specifically set aside for the enhancement of wildlife and wildlife habitat. In Tennessee, they range in size from 80,000 acres down to a couple of hundred acres.

We have over 90 WMA’S scattered across the state covering over 1,300,000 acres. All are either managed or owned by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and are open to the general public for a variety of uses including hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and whitewater. To illustrate the beauty and diversity of WMA’S, Wild Side Guide Alan Griggs takes us to two them on the Cumberland Plateau.

Bridgestone Firestone Centennial Wilderness Wildlife Management Area is located in White county on the Cumberland county line, 6 miles south of Highway 70 South. It consists of 10,000 acres of undeveloped wilderness donated to the TWRA by the Bridgestone-Firestone Corporation.

The Catoosa Wildlife Management Area consists of about 80,000 acres in Cumberland, Morgan, and Fentress counties 20 miles north of Crossville, Tennessee. Catoosa is considered the “crown jewel” of WMA’S because of its size, beauty, and outdoor activities.
