Alligator Snapping Turtles

From Episode 1105

Alligator Snapping Turtle

Here’s a story about an animal that uses its tongue as a lure. It’s the alligator snapping turtle, a fearsome-looking animal that you would swear is a throwback to the prehistoric age by its looks. He just sits on the bottom of a river and waits for fish to come by, then wiggles his tongue, which looks like a small worm, to attract them. Wild Side Guide Alan Griggs takes us to west Tennessee to show us how this tough-looking turtle is returning to its natural home.

Learn more about the alligator snapping turtle by visiting www.chelydra.org and www.nashvillezoo.org/asturtle.htm. The animals that make up Tennessee’s wildlife kingdom are many and varied. You can get an idea of just how impressive they are by visiting the web home of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency at www.tnwildlife.org.
