Wood Duck Banding by the TWRA

From Episode 108

wood ducks

Currently, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has allowed only three states to participate in a fall hunting season for wood ducks. Those states: Florida, Kentucky, and Tennessee. In order for these states to hunt these waterfowl out of the normal winter season, they have been asked to provide data on the birds’ migratory habits. That’s where the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency comes in. Wild Side Guide Karen Brady was up at the crack of dawn on an excursion with wildlife biologists trap and band ducks. Their data is used by the feds to track the species across North America. Tennessee hunters however, may lose the right for the September season in 2001. Federal legislators will let the states know this coming summer.
