Comeback Quail

From Episode 902

Fifty years ago this little bird was a favorite target for hunters across Tennessee. But once it started losing its home to farming and development, it all but vanished from our countryside. Today the quail, or bobwhite, as some people call it, is making a slow but steady comeback in some parts of our state. How that’s happening is a story in itself, as explained by Wild Side Guide Alan Griggs.

The key to the quail’s comeback, as Alan tells us, is convincing landowners to return their land to its natural state. Under certain programs, they can share the costs of planting natural grasses with the federal government and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

If you are a landowner and you’re interested in creating wildlife habitat, the TWRA stands ready to help. Visit the agency’s website at www.tnwildlife.org or give the folks a call at 877-727-0014. Even non-hunters who own land can plant wildlife-friendly cover on their property to enjoy the wildlife benefits. Learn more about quail by visiting the website of Quail Unlimited at www.qu.org.
