Big South Fork Mussels
Join us for a journey to one of Tennessee’s most remote areas. Flowing 77 miles through some of the most beautiful and rugged countryside in the state, the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River can take your breath away. But looks can be deceiving. Beneath this river’s pristine surface some of the rarest freshwater mussels in all of North America are fighting for survival. Wild Side Guide Alan Griggs takes us to Scott County, where the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and other groups are working hard to save those mussels from people and pollution.
Alan tells us that the restoration efforts by the TWRA and others may take decades to complete but the results will be a cleaner river and healthier, more abundant wildlife.
The TWRA’s mission includes the conservation and enhancement of wildlife habitat. To learn more about the agency and what it does, including the latest hunting and fishing regulations, visit www.tnwildlife.org.
Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area is a truly beautiful part of the state. Before visiting, be sure to check out www.nps.gov/biso and www.bigsouthforkinfo.com. You can learn more about the mussels there by going to www.npca.org/magazine/2004/fall/mussels3.asp, home of the National Parks Conservation Association.
