Sandhill Crane Migration
Remember the 1993 film “Fly Away Home?” It was about an ultra light pilot who trained Canada geese to fly with him in hopes to learn more about migration patterns. On October 3, 2000, a pilot study was launched with Sandhill cranes to establish safe stopover sites between Wisconsin and Florida. *Update: This migration ended successfully when two ultra lights landed at the St. Martins Marsh Aquatic Refuge in Florida with 11 cranes on the 11th day of the 11th month; Veterans day in the United States, Remembrance day in Canada. It surely was a day to remember! We follow the team through their stop over in Tennessee, and learn how the information gathered in this study, will eventually be utilized to assist the endangered whooping crane.
