Black Bears
Many years ago black bears roamed across every region of Tennessee. That was before they were hunted heavily, causing their numbers to dwindle. Today, black bears are found primarily in the northeast corner of our state, usually in the Smoky Mountains. There, they are trying to coexist not only with residents but with a growing number of tourists who think of the bears more as novelties than wild animals. Black bears are one of the original inhabitants of Tennessee’s woods and, as such, have suffered at the hands of man. Today, though, their habitat is expanding. With that comes the inevitable clash of bear and civilization with the result, all too often, of misunderstanding and fear. Wild Side Guide Alan Griggs tells us more.
